Abstract |
Depression is a complex and multifactorial disorder, and its prevalence is increasing globally. The gut-brain axis plays a significant role in the development of depression, and changes in gut microbiota are linked to its underlying mechanisms. The gut microbiota can affect mood and behavior through producing neurotransmitters and inflammatory molecules. Studying the gut-brain axis in depression may lead to new treatments that target microbiota. Stress is a major risk factor of depression. Fermented foods, rich in probiotics, can potentially help reduce stress and improve mental health. By supporting a healthy gut microbiota, these foods may positively impact mood and well-being. This suggests that consuming fermented foods could be a natural way to cope with stress and promote mental health. This study aims to investigate the potential antidepressant effects of Allium ampeloprasum fermented extract by fermenting leek juice with bacterial endophyte and its impact on gut microbiota in a rat model of chronic mild unpredictable stress paradigm. The extract was analyzed for phenolic and flavonoid content, FT-IR, and antimicrobial activity. Colon goblet cells were counted. Identification of oxidative stress indicators, oxidant and antioxidant markers found in colon and brain tissue, and measurement of blood corticosterone levels. Genes encoding the mRNAs of inflammation markers were detected using real-time PCR. The study shows that fermented Allium ampeloprasum extract has antidepressant properties in rats exposed to stress-induced depression. This might be due to changes in gut bacteria. The results suggest that fermented plant extracts could be useful in treating mental health issues. |
