Abstract
Photocatalysis and adsorption are easy to set up techniques, operate effectively at room temperature, cost-effective, and eco-friendly without leading to secondary pollutants. Copper oxide (CuO) has gained attention as effective adsorbent and photocatalyst materials, as it can easily be used for the removal of organic pollutants, heavy metal ions and toxic pollutants from aqueous solutions. Efficiency of CuO as a photocatalyst could be enhanced by forming heterojunction composite with another semiconductor as CdS. The approach of preparing a heterojunction that have photocatalytic efficiency under natural sunlight irradiation is a promising approach. CuO/CdS composites were synthesized by coprecipitation method in different ratios. Efficiency of CuO/CdS composites with different CdS content were examined for removal of Doxycycline as a model organic pollutant by photocatalysis and adsorption techniques. Results confirmed that the composites have better removal efficiency than the neat samples. Photocatalysis in direct sunlight irradiation showed better removal efficiency than adsorption in dark.
